If you are traveling to an ocean location, going snorkeling is almost a must. Going snorkeling allows you to take advantage of the natural beauty, and really connect with the place that you are visiting. You don't have to be an expert to go snorkeling; snorkeling is an activity that beginners can easily partake in.
If you are going snorkeling for the first time, it can be helpful to learn a little bit about the process before you go so you are comfortable with everything. When you go snorkeling for the first time, you should always go with a snorkel tour group, where the event will be surprised, and you will have an expert on hand to assist you with any questions you have.
The Basics of Snorkeling
When you go snorkeling, you have to wear a diving mask. The diving mask is made to fit tightly over your face. It will go over both your eyes and your noise. This is so you can keep your eyes open but not exposed to the ocean water. Not everyone likes to open their eyes underwater, and this allows you to see a little better too than you would without a mask.
You will also have a breathing tube, which will go into your mouth. It is kind of like wearing a mouth guard as you go swimming. The breathing tube is designed to stick up out of the water and is what allows you to stay under the water for longer. As you breathe in through your mouth, you will breathe in oxygen from above the ocean.
You can also wear some swim fins. The swim fins go over your feet. They are designed to make it easier for you to swim and float through the water.
The Equipment for Snorkeling
You don't have to purchase the equipment or buy it. There should be shops where you can rent the equipment. If you are going on a tour, the tour group should provide you with snorkeling equipment for the tour.
When you put on the mask, make sure that it fits tight on your face, you don't want any water getting into your mask. You should check your mask in a swimming pool to make sure that it is the right fit.
For the swim fins, you will need to know your shoe size. If you are traveling to a non-US country, be sure to remember your European shoe size instead.
When it comes to going snorkeling, if you can swim a little bit, you can snorkel. Snorkeling is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of an area and get to see the sea life up-close and personal.
